Identify the problem and a possible fix
Write down the issue, its effect on your course and the change you need. A teacher mismatch, unsuitable timetable and serious safety concern should not be treated as the same kind of problem.
- For a teaching issue, ask the academic coordinator about a teacher, level or task adjustment.
- For accommodation, ask whether a room or residence change is available and what it costs.
- For an unresolved essential requirement, record the original written agreement and the actual gap.
- Agree a reasonable review point if you choose to try a fix.
If you are in immediate danger, prioritise safety and contact the appropriate local services and trusted support. This checklist is not a reason to remain somewhere unsafe while waiting for paperwork.
Get a written exit account
Do not treat unused weeks as money you can automatically spend at another school. The applicable cancellation agreement determines what can be refunded, retained or charged.
- Ask which tuition and accommodation dates count as used.
- Request an itemised statement for unused services, deposits and deductions.
- Separate refundable amounts from non-refundable fees and pending decisions.
- Confirm notice requirements, the recipient of any refund and the payment timetable.
- Ask what happens to belongings, room checkout and meals during the gap.
Keep the enrolment terms, payment records and the school's reply. A verbal expectation of a refund is not available cash. Avoid paying the next school on the assumption that reimbursement will arrive first.
Check documents before the new start date
The Bureau of Immigration publishes an SSP service page and a documentary checklist. The checklist requires a letter of acceptance from an authorised school and passport information. These school-related requirements are a reason to check your case, not proof of an automatic transfer route.
- Give the new school's authorised coordinator your current study dates and permit situation through a private channel.
- Ask Bureau of Immigration or the responsible authorised coordinator what procedure applies to changing institutions.
- Confirm whether a new application or other action is needed before attending the new course.
- Request the document list, responsible office, anticipated timing and official payment evidence.
- Check your authorised stay separately: SSP is not a substitute for permission to remain, a 9(f) visa or permission to work.
Do not infer that a new school can reuse an existing SSP, or that leaving a school extends your stay. This is a planning guide, not an individual immigration decision.
Verify the receiving school and learning handover
A place discussed in a message is not a confirmed course and room. Ask the new school for a written offer covering the actual campus, dates, accommodation and full quote.
- Confirm the course level and placement assessment.
- Send a short learning record: goals, topics covered, sample work and recurring difficulties.
- Ask how the new timetable addresses the problem that triggered the move.
- Confirm any arrival gap, transfer transport and temporary accommodation.
- Read the new cancellation terms before paying.
Illustrative case: the problem is too little task-specific speaking practice. Moving to a nicer room will not resolve it. Ask the receiving school to demonstrate the proposed lesson task before deciding.
Choose among three workable options
- Stay with an agreed change if the current school can resolve the issue and you can verify the result.
- Move if the receiving place, costs, accommodation and document procedure are confirmed.
- Pause or shorten the course if neither option currently meets essential conditions; confirm the consequences before committing.
Keep a single checklist of confirmed, pending and rejected items. Finalise checkout and new check-in dates only after resolving dependencies. No partner school is promised to have space, accept a transfer, recognise prior payments or preserve an existing permit. Ask for the arrangements in writing for your actual dates.
Frequently asked questions
Will my unused tuition transfer to the next school?
Not automatically. A refund follows the current agreement; a new school's charges follow its own offer. Get separate written accounts.
Can I use the same SSP after moving?
Do not assume so. Confirm the procedure for your institution change with Bureau of Immigration or the responsible authorised coordinator before the new start.
Should I always leave when classes feel unsuitable?
Not necessarily. An agreed teacher, level or timetable change may solve the problem. Serious safety concerns require prompt appropriate help, not a trial of academic adjustments.
