Start with the receiving organisation
IELTS describes Academic as relevant to undergraduate or postgraduate study and professional registration. General Training is associated with migration, workplace and everyday contexts, and study below degree level. These are general purposes, not an individual acceptance decision. Your university, employer, registration body or relevant authority must confirm what it accepts.
Save the current requirement rather than relying on another applicant's experience. Ask for the exact test name, required overall band and minimums in each skill, submission deadline and permitted test arrangements. If a specific route names an additional test requirement, verify it with that authority. A preparation school cannot override the recipient's rules.
Compare the parts that change
| Component | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Listening and Speaking | Same test components as General Training | Same test components as Academic |
| Reading | Academic reading tasks and texts | Everyday, workplace and general-interest reading contexts |
| Writing Task 1 | Describe visual information such as a graph, table, chart or diagram | Write a letter for a stated situation and purpose |
| Writing Task 2 | Essay responding to a viewpoint, argument or problem | Essay responding to a viewpoint, argument or problem |
Both Writing versions use minimum lengths of 150 words for Task 1 and 250 for Task 2; Task 2 carries more weight. A shared essay label does not mean every practice task or feedback focus is interchangeable. “General” also does not mean that the score you need will be easy to achieve.
Turn the version into a study plan
Begin with a diagnostic using the correct Reading and Writing tasks. For Academic, check whether you can select key features and write an overview instead of listing every number in a visual. For General Training, check purpose, tone and coverage of the requested points in a letter. Then identify essay organisation and language problems that also need work.
Use individual feedback to revise a draft, not only collect a predicted band. Practise Listening and Speaking as well, even though their format is shared. Repeat comparable timed tasks after targeted practice and review what has changed. There is no universal number of study weeks that guarantees your required score.
Audit the school's actual delivery
- Does it teach your version, or merely advertise a general IELTS programme?
- Will Writing feedback cover your Task 1 type and the required essay work?
- Are Reading materials and mock tests version-specific?
- Who marks work, and how is feedback followed by correction?
- Are official test registration, fees and dates included or handled separately?
A mixed class can cover shared skills, but the school should explain where the different tasks receive suitable teaching. An internal mock is practice, not an official accepted result. Obtain the proposed schedule before deciding that the programme title alone is sufficient.
Handle uncertainty before payment
Hypothetically, two applicants need the same overall band: one recipient requires Academic, while another requires General Training. They cannot safely choose one shared package without checking its task coverage. If your recipient has not yet confirmed the version, use general language practice while requesting clarification. Do not book a test based on a guess, and do not infer that one score will meet every later application.
Frequently asked questions
Is General Training always easier?
No useful guarantee follows from that label. Tasks differ, and the required score and your current skills determine the preparation needed.
Can one class prepare both versions?
It may cover shared skills, but verify separate Reading materials, Task 1 teaching and suitable mock tests for your version.
Who decides which version I need?
The organisation or authority receiving the result. Obtain its current requirement before selecting the test and course.
