One-to-one vs group lessons: choose the right course structure

Philippines School editorial team · Last reviewed:

Choose one-to-one lessons for concentrated feedback on your own speaking or writing; choose group lessons to practise responding to other learners and negotiating meaning. A mixed timetable can serve both purposes. Before comparing packages, check lesson length, actual group size, level placement and compulsory study. More scheduled lessons do not automatically mean more useful practice.

Compare the learning task, not just the label

In an individual lesson, you can repeat a difficult explanation, rehearse a presentation or ask for detailed corrections without waiting for other students. That is useful when your needs differ from the class. But sustained teacher attention can be tiring, and a conversation with a helpful teacher does not reproduce every real-world interaction.

In a group, you practise taking turns, following unfamiliar answers and asking another speaker to clarify. The value depends on how the teacher organises participation. A small class can still leave a quiet student listening rather than speaking. Ask what students actually do, not simply how many chairs are in the room.

A decision matrix for your main difficulty

  • You understand questions but cannot build an answer: prioritise individual speaking practice, then test it in a group.
  • You speak comfortably with teachers but struggle in meetings: look for group discussion with managed turn-taking.
  • You need feedback on a specific essay or work presentation: reserve individual correction time.
  • You lose concentration during long study days: choose a manageable timetable with revision breaks rather than the largest lesson count.

Read the timetable in usable units

Request one sample week showing individual classes, group classes, supervised study and optional activities separately. Check the duration of each lesson and breaks; the word “hour” is not enough. Ask whether advertised group sizes are maximums or recent averages, whether groups are organised by level, and what happens when too few students enrol.

Also check public-holiday arrangements, teacher changes, class-change deadlines and whether a package adjustment creates extra charges. An attractive timetable is only useful if it applies to your campus and arrival date.

What primary school pages actually establish

Paradise English describes a combination of small classes and one-to-one lessons. QQEnglish publishes supplementary materials for its study-abroad group lessons, including beginner and intermediate sections. These examples establish that group teaching is a real part of the offer; they do not establish the current mix or available places in your chosen package. Request a dated course description and quotation.

Try a transfer task before increasing intensity

Hypothetical example: a learner wants to explain a work problem without reading notes. In an individual lesson, they prepare the explanation and correct unclear sentences. In a group, classmates ask unplanned questions. Afterwards, the learner rewrites the explanation using the feedback. This connects accuracy with interaction rather than treating the two lesson types as competitors.

During your first study week, keep a short record of speaking opportunities, recurring errors and energy after class. Discuss it with the academic coordinator before buying extra lessons. No timetable guarantees a particular rate of progress, and a busy schedule still needs time for sleep and review.

Frequently asked questions

Are individual lessons always better?

No. They provide focused attention, while group lessons introduce less predictable interaction. Choose the combination that matches your task and energy.

Can a complete beginner join a group?

Ask how placement works and whether a suitable beginner group runs on your dates. A beginner label alone does not confirm the pace or support.

What should I request before paying?

A campus-specific timetable, lesson durations, group-size rules, holiday arrangements, change conditions and an itemised quotation.
