What it costs
London general-English tuition typically runs £320–480 per week, with regional cities lower. On top of tuition, budget for accommodation, London living costs, and flights — the UK is one of the most expensive study destinations overall.
Accreditation
Only choose schools accredited by the British Council (look for "Accreditation UK"). It guarantees teaching standards, welfare and facilities, and is expected for visa-relevant study.
Visa & work rules
Most language students use the Short-term Study route (up to 11 months for English courses). Note its restrictions: it generally does not permit work, and you must study with an accredited provider. Longer academic study uses the Student visa, which has separate requirements.
A shrinking, pricier market
Recent visa changes and cost pressures have pushed UK ELT enrolments down (311,815 students, −4.8%), and many learners now weigh cheaper, English-speaking alternatives.
UK vs a budget alternative
If your goal is maximum speaking practice rather than a UK postcode, the maths is stark: a month in London can cost several times an all-inclusive intensive month elsewhere. Many students now compare the UK against one-to-one immersion in the Philippines or run a full total-cost comparison before deciding.
