Who is responsible for your child during a junior English course?

Philippines School editorial team · Last reviewed:

A junior course, a shared room and airport pickup do not automatically provide continuous supervision. Before booking, obtain a written plan naming the responsible adult at each stage and explaining emergency decisions. Keep school arrangements separate from immigration requirements. This guide is a family planning checklist, not a claim that every school accepts the same ages or offers a guardian service.

Separate three different meanings of guardian

A parent or legal guardian, a travel companion and a school employee supervising an activity may have different roles. Ask the school to name exactly what it offers and what it does not. A teacher responsible for a lesson is not automatically the adult responsible for the child overnight. Accommodation in a school building does not by itself establish a residential supervision service.

Confirm acceptance for the child’s actual age, dates and accommodation arrangement in writing. Ask whether the accompanying adult must be a parent, whether another adult may be accepted and which supporting documents the school requires. Do not infer an age policy from another campus or from a family package advertised in the past.

Write a handover plan for the whole day

Build the plan around your actual timetable, including the parent’s lessons. For each period, record a named person or duty role, location, contact and the point at which responsibility passes to the next adult. If the school cannot confirm a period, arrange your own suitable cover before booking rather than calling it included supervision.

  • Arrival: who meets the child, and what happens after a delayed flight?
  • Lessons: who checks attendance and contacts the parent if the child is absent?
  • Breaks and meals: who is present between scheduled activities?
  • Transport and outings: who signs the child in and out, and who can collect them?
  • Evenings and weekends: who remains responsible outside programme hours?
  • Emergencies: who calls the parent, seeks help and follows the agreed consent procedure?

This is a proposed planning checklist, not a description of services supplied by any named school. Record what happens if the responsible adult becomes unavailable, including when the parent must return.

Check entry documents separately from school consent

The Bureau of Immigration’s WEG page addresses children below fifteen who are unaccompanied by or not coming to a parent. Its wording is specific: an accompanying adult is not automatically equivalent to a parent for entry purposes. If the travel arrangement may fall within that rule, clarify the applicable WEG procedure with BI and the relevant Philippine consular authority before travel.

School acceptance, parental consent, study permission and permission to enter or stay are different matters. Ask which documents establish the relationship and authority of the travelling adult for your case, then check airline and departure-country requirements separately. The SSP checklist is a study-permission document list; it does not appoint the school as a legal guardian. Do not assume a consent letter alone resolves every border requirement.

Make the parent’s course compatible with the care plan

Consider a hypothetical parent and child whose lessons finish at different times. The parent’s extra class is feasible only if the gap has an agreed responsible adult and collection arrangement. A second hypothetical family stays off campus: transport and the handover at the school gate must be agreed independently of classroom teaching. Neither example establishes a school policy.

Before paying, obtain separate terms for the child’s programme, the adult’s course, accommodation, any supervision service and transport. Clarify consent for outings, authorized collectors, emergency contacts and how changes are communicated. Avoid sending a child on the basis of the word ‘guardian’ alone. There is no universal age threshold for all school programmes in this guide, no promised round-the-clock care and no individualized legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does a junior course include all-day supervision?

Not automatically. Obtain written coverage for lessons, breaks, transport, evenings and weekends, including any gaps.

Can a non-parent accompanying adult replace all immigration paperwork?

No. Clarify the travel arrangement with BI and the relevant consular authority; school consent and border requirements are separate.

Can the parent take an independent English course?

Ask the school. It works only if acceptance, timetables and a complete care and collection plan are confirmed for your family.
