Work rights are a major deciding factor for longer stays. They depend entirely on the country and your visa type.
Where you can usually work
Common part-time work allowances for eligible student visas:
- Ireland — 20 hrs/week (Stamp 2, on ILEP courses)
- Australia — 48 hrs/fortnight (subclass 500)
- New Zealand — 20 hrs/week on courses of 14+ weeks
- Canada — generally tied to academic/co-op programmes, not standalone ESL
Where you usually can't
Short-stay language routes (e.g. the UK Short-term Study route) and US F-1 language study generally do not permit off-campus work — budget to self-fund.
